This is the time when celebrities (always
fashionably late) are still scarce, and general entry
spectators can flaunt their garbthi for this year’s July
theme, Captains Table.
At the Durban Fashion Fair marquee, up-and-
coming designers gathered mid-afternoon to vie for
the best dressed title.
Although not directly related to the theme, Zanele
Shezi took inspiration from the Nkandla
Homestead.  She flaunted a thatch hat paired with a
grass handbag. Considering that the firepool have
been a hot topic, Shezi certainly knew how to grab
attention.
Denelle Ince, dressed by designer Ayasmin
Saanglae, took a technicolour approach to the
theme, with giant pink lashes to boot.
Dressed by Phalaborwa-based designer Bryetta,
Nomsa Theaedi was statuesque in a lime green and
orange gown, with a giant conk functioning as her
handbag.
Celebrity spotters at the SABC marquee, and this
year’s biggest marquee for Jack Daniels,
Boomtown, have been restless.
The Vodacom Duran July has always been the
watering hole for gazelle like celebs in the month of
July, and the 119th race was no different.
Media mogul Basetsana Kumalo, the picture of
grace, was spotted in the swanky Vodacom VIP
Paddock in a lace-mint gown, with a black lattice
covering her eyes. The stunning former Top Billing
presenter says, “I did the lattice to have some
pizazz.”
Tamara Dey, took the theme Captain’s Table to
heart (one of the few celebs spotted who took the
theme into consideration). She was inspired by the
tragedy Pearl Harbor for her grey Asian-fusion – a
bit odd, but as you do Tamara, as you do. Lorna Maseko appropriately (considering the sunny
Durban weather) came covered in a flirty black
cocktail dress, showing her legs (which considering
her ongoing love affair with ballet is flawless).
Nomzamo Mbatha killed it in a red cat suit with
billowing sleeves. She happens to be punting her
new film with Maps Maponyane Tell Me Sweet
Something in Durban. “We’re here promoting the film. I’m really excited
about it; it was such a big experience.”
Film goddess Terry Pheto sported a Gert-Johan
Coetzee original white gown, with Louboutin heels
to match – and owned the VIP paddock before the
main race where most of the celebs where hanging
out before taking on Jack Daniels Boomtown later
the afternoon.
Also wearing a gloriously loud Gert Johan-Coetzee
design was Queen B Bonang Matheba. The yellow
dress lit up the TV screen as she hosted the SABC
3 coverage of the red carpet leading up to the day’s
main race.
Maps Maponyane classed it up with a navy blue
suit, undercoat and tie – always the picture of
sophistication. He also punted Tell Me Sweet
Something. Maponyane’s July is shaping up to be a
hell of a month. Not only is he hosting a new series
on ANN7 – the film is gaurenteed to even further
his credentials as SA’s hottest talent.
Presenter Dalen Lance went classical, with a white
blazer and bow tie combo.
Minister of Sport (and Twitter), Fikile Mbalula
actually looked together in a fun purple velvet bow
tie and grey tweed suit. Appropriate and
scandaless.
Also spotted was Joburg’s pothole whisperer, ward
councillor David Potter in a blue suit and red bow tie
(subconsciously celebrating the American 4th of
July celebration perhaps?).
Hip hop’s alleged rivals AKA and Cassper Nyovest
headlines the Jack Daniels Boomtown marquee
tonight – with Mafikizolo, K.O, Black Motion, Uhuru
Black Coffee and DJ Fresh joining the line-up to end
the 2015 Vodacom Durban July
