Teen Vogue just released its August 2015 covers
featuring three rising stars of the modeling
industry which includes an all-Black trio – Aya
Jones, Lineisy Montero & Imaan Hammam as
        “Fashion’s New Faces”.
Going against the notorious
preference for white models on the runway and
on the cover of magazines even with today’s ever-present subject of race and the
lack of Black models in the fashion industry,
our attention was the fact that the cover
features different hairstyles and textures
Yea
we're talking slick straight, a small 'fro, and
bouncy curls. These hairstyles showcase the
diversity of hair and beauty among black
women.
All were dressed in a blue Jean top and
this isn't the first time a model's hairstyle has
caused a buzz for Teen Vogue . In late June,
Beauty and Health Director Elaine Welteroth —
who also pens the August cover story —
responded to online criticism the magazine
received for a story featuring a biracial model
with an Afrocentric hairstyle . In an open letter
on the glossy's site, Welteroth defends her
decision for casting a racially ambiguous model
by reminding readers that "black comes in a
myriad of colors and textures—all of them
beautiful, all of them deserving of
representation" and cites Zendaya's Oscar
dreadlocks as inspiration for the story.
Known to be a reliable source when looking for the
next ‘it girl’ in fashion – having predicted the talent
of people like Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lawrence,
Chanel Iman, Karlie Kloss and more – when they
say these are the gals to watch, you better keep
your eyes peeled.
After securing their presence on the runway, they
are sure to make some big waves in the coming
months. According to Fashiosta.com , Aya was
found on the streets of Paris and has since walked
in 47 runways; Lineisy was scouted at an
amusement park in Santo Domingo and has
featured in campaigns for brands since then; and
Imaan, half-Moroccan and half-Egyptian born in
Amsterdam, has appeared in Victoria’s Secret
runway and a Givenchy campaign.
We can’t wait to see what they do next – maybe
spearhead campaigns and collections?
Check
out each model's cover, and catch them on
newsstands on July 14.
